Welcome to New Hampshire! Picture 1978; the Boston & Maine Railroad is struggling with deferred maintenance, although the GP40s are brand new. Budd’s RDCs are used for passenger service, although after a brutal winter, many are hauled by aging GP7 locomotives. The New Hampshire Mainline, once double tracked to Concord, is now barely surviving as a bridge line between Boston and White River Junction. Local switchers out of Manchester still serve the local industries.

On the layout… a joint venture between Amtrak and Canadian National provides passenger service between Boston and Montreal. Local commuter service from Concord to Boston is covered by Budd RDCs, or the occasional traditional passenger trains. Four mainline freights swap cars between Ayer, Boston, Concord, and White River Junction, making their only stop on the modeled layout in Manchester. Local trains handle the switching duties in Merrimack, Manchester, Daveville and Edville; the latter two named after the owner’s sons. Cars are routed by four-cycle waybills, and trains follow a sequence, rather than adhering to a fast clock. A typical operating session takes about two hours. The layout is controlled with a Digitrax DCC system, using JMRI. Operators are encouraged to have WiThrottle (iOS) or Engine Driver (Android) pre-loaded on their smart phones, or bring a Digitrax throttle.
